Isaac Perlmutter was born in 1942 in Mandatory Palestine
Isaac Perlmutter was born to a Jewish family in Mandatory Palestine in 1942. He served in the IDF during the Six-Day War of 1967 and then moved to New York.
In New York he first used his Hebrew to lead funeral services at Jewish cemeteries in Brooklyn. He later sold toys and beauty products on the street and moved into selling surplus goods. He never attended a university but taught himself to read balance sheets.
With Bernard Marden he founded Odd Lot Trading, which they sold to Revco in 1984 for 12% of its stock. In 1988 he bought the senior debt of the toy maker Coleco, which soon filed for bankruptcy. In 1994 he bought control of Remington Products and sold it in 1996.
In 1990 he and Avi Arad bought Toy Biz. After Marvel went bankrupt in 1996, the two gained control of the company, and Toy Biz and Marvel merged in 1998. He became chief executive of Marvel Entertainment in 2005, and Marvel was sold to Walt Disney in 2009.
He stayed with Marvel after the sale and served as chairman until 2023. He also acted as an unofficial advisor in the administration of Donald Trump, overseeing the Department of Veterans Affairs.
