Israel Huberman was born in 1947 in Haifa

Israel Huberman was born on December 23, 1947, in Haifa. He grew up, studied and lived in the city, and graduated from the Hebrew Reali School.

He joined the IDF in 1965 and served in Battalion 12 of the Golani Brigade. He first led a squad in the battalion's A Company, then left after friction with the company commander to train as a demolitions NCO. He finished that course half a year before the Six-Day War and joined the support platoon.

On June 9, 1967, during the battle for Tel Faher, his half-track was hit and several soldiers inside were killed. Huberman went back into the burning vehicle to rescue wounded comrades, and his clothes caught fire. He suffered burns on 40% of his body.

Chief of Staff Yitzhak Rabin gave him a Chief of Staff citation in October 1967. In April 1973 the decoration was converted to the Medal of Courage, presented by Chief of Staff David Elazar. Huberman recovered and went on with his life.
