He moved to Israel and served in the IDF during the First Intifada as a guard at Ktzi'ot Prison. While in Israel he wrote a column for The Jerusalem Post. He later became an Israeli citizen, and in 2013 he said he had decided to give up that citizenship.
Back in the United States he reported on police for The Washington Post and wrote for The Forward, New York magazine and The New York Times Magazine. He joined The New Yorker in 2000, and his story "In the Party of God" won the National Magazine Award in 2003. His 2006 book Prisoners tells of his time at the prison and his later friendship with a former prisoner.
He joined The Atlantic in 2007 and became its editor-in-chief in 2016. In 2020 he reported that Donald Trump had called fallen U.S. soldiers losers, which Trump denied.
