Michal Rovner was born in 1957 in Tel Aviv

Michal Rovner was born in 1957 in Tel Aviv. As a young woman she danced, but she stopped because of her military service. Her brother Oded was killed during his army service.

She studied cinema, television and philosophy at Tel Aviv University. She then studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and received a BFA in photography and art in 1985.

In 1978 she and Arie Hammer, her husband, founded the Camera Obscura School of Art in Tel Aviv, which closed in 2005. In the early 1990s she worked with director Robert Frank on two films. Her early photo series, such as Outside and Decoy, used altered images of places and people.

From 1996 she worked with film and video. She had a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum in 2002, represented Israel at the Venice Biennale in 2003 and showed the installation Histories at the Louvre in 2011. In 2006 she sold the work Makom 1 for 850 thousand dollars.

She divides her time between New York and a moshav near Jerusalem. In May 2024 she set up the installation Path of Cypresses in Hostages Square in Tel Aviv, with 38 cypress trees.
