Nadav Kander was born in 1961 in Tel Aviv
Kander was born in Tel Aviv in December 1961. His father was an El Al pilot who lost an eye and could no longer fly. In 1963 the family moved to Johannesburg, South Africa.
He started taking pictures at 13 with a Pentax camera bought with his Bar Mitzvah money. While serving in the South African Air Force, he printed aerial photographs in a darkroom. There he decided to become a photographer.
Kander moved to London in 1986, where he lives with his wife Nicole and their 3 children. His series Yangtze, The Long River won the Prix Pictet in 2009. In January 2009 The New York Times Magazine published 52 of his portraits of people around President Barack Obama in one issue.
From 2010 to 2012 he photographed a series of nudes in his London studio. His work has been shown in many exhibitions, including at the National Portrait Gallery and the Barbican Centre in London. He shot the 2016 TIME Person of the Year cover and received an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society in 2015.
