Nati Linial was born in 1953 in Haifa

Nathan (Nati) Linial was born in Haifa in 1953. He graduated from the Hebrew Reali School in Haifa in 1970.

He earned his first degree at the Technion. In 1978 he received a PhD in mathematics from the Hebrew University, supervised by Micha Perles, with a thesis on graph theory. He then did postdoctoral work at the University of California, Los Angeles.

He returned to the Hebrew University as a faculty member and became a professor at its School of Computer Science and Engineering. His research covers combinatorics, discrete mathematics, graph theory, algorithms and theoretical computer science. He has also worked on bioinformatics studies with his wife, Professor Michal Linial.

His awards include the Lévy Conant Prize in 2008, the Dijkstra Prize in 2013, the Rothschild Prize in 2016 and the FOCS Test of Time Award in 2019. He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society and sits on the council of the New Israel Fund. He has three children, among them the poet Nadav Linial.
