Ram Karmi was born in 1931 in Jerusalem

Ram Karmi was born in Jerusalem in 1931 and grew up in Tel Aviv. His father was the architect Dov Karmi, and his sister is the architect Ada Karmi-Melamede.

He studied visual art at the Avni Institute in 1947. He served in the Israel Defense Forces in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. He then studied architecture at the Technion and at the Architectural Association in London, from 1951 to 1956.

He joined his father's office, which worked on the Knesset building, and took over the office in 1962. He designed the El Al building in Tel Aviv, the Negev Center in Beersheba and the Tel Aviv Central Bus Station. Until 1979 he was chief architect of the Housing Ministry.

In 1986 he and his sister won the competition to design the Supreme Court building, which was completed in 1992. Some of his projects, including the bus station and the Holyland project, drew criticism. He taught at the Technion from 1964 to 1994 and was a full professor at Ariel University.

He received the Israel Prize for architecture in 2002. He died on April 11, 2013, and was buried in Bnei Zion.
