Kleinstein was born in New York City in 1962 to an Ashkenazi Jewish family. The family moved to Israel in 1968, went back to the United States, and returned to Israel in 1970. As a child he trained in piano and classical music.
In 1978, while in high school, he formed a band called Likui Hama with Yermi Kaplan. In his teens he met the singer Rita.
He joined the IDF in 1980 and became musical director of the military band Tzahal 80, where Rita was also a member. He later composed most of the songs for the band Tzahal 84.
He scored the films The Boarding School and Wrath and Glory, and in 1985 composed the hit Od Lo Tamu Kol Pela'ayikh. His first album, Beyom Shel Hapzatza, came out in 1986 and reached gold status, and Rita's debut album that year was largely his work. Later albums included Al Hagesher Hayashan in 1989, Ahavini in 1991, and Tapuhim Ve'tmarim, which reached triple platinum.
He married Rita in 1988, and they had 2 daughters, Meshi and Noam. The couple legally separated in 2007.
