Rami Matan was born in 1951 in Haifa
Rami Matan was born in Haifa on March 6, 1951, the youngest of 6 children. His mother, Adele Toledano, taught French. His father, attorney Yosef Maman, was a chief judge at the Haifa Magistrate's Court.
He studied in the Middle East studies track at the military boarding school in Haifa. He enlisted in 1969 and chose the Armored Corps, inspired by a book by Shabtai Teveth.
In the Yom Kippur War he commanded a company in Battalion 79 of the 14th Brigade. His company fought in the holding battles against the Egyptian army and later in the battle of the Chinese Farm. In 1975 he filed a complaint against the brigade commander, which led to an investigation and the commander's conviction, and Matan then left the army.
After leaving the army he drove a heavy truck. In the 1980s he was security officer at Israel's embassy in Cyprus and then at the consulate in New York, where he was removed in 1986 after a conflict with his deputy. In 1982 he was among the founders of the village of Nataf, where he heads the local committee.
He owns a company that imports and markets organic fertilizers. He has been an activist in the protest against Benjamin Netanyahu.
