Shahar Shelly

Shahar Shelly is an Israeli neurologist and researcher who heads the neurology department at Rambam hospital and is an associate professor at the Technion faculty of medicine.

Shahar Shelly was born in 1982 in Rehovot

Shelly was born in Rehovot in 1982 and grew up in Ashdod. He is the eldest son of Danny, an engineer and building contractor, and Ora, a career soldier. At 16 he completed a sports instructor course at the Wingate Institute.

He served as an officer in the Egoz Unit. From 2005 to 2012 he studied medicine at the University of Debrecen in Hungary, and from 2013 to 2017 he trained in neurology at Tel HaShomer hospital.

From 2018 to 2021 he worked at Mayo Clinic, where he trained in neuromuscular diseases, electrophysiology and neuroimmunology, and in 2021 he joined its faculty. In 2022 he became head of neuromuscular diseases and clinical electrophysiology at Rambam, and in April 2024 he became director of its neurology department. He also heads an artificial intelligence lab at the Technion and chairs the Israeli society for neuromuscular diseases.

His research covers biomarkers of neurological disease and cancer, the effects of cancer drugs on nerves and muscles, and the blood brain barrier. With Dvir Aran he studied GPT-4 as a decision aid for stroke care and developed an AI tool to monitor clinical checkpoints. He is also medical director of the startup Remepy.
