Shmuel Levi was born in 1946 in Meknes

Shmuel Levi was born in Meknes, Morocco, the youngest of 4 sons. He immigrated to Israel as a child. He attended the Habonim elementary school in Kiryat Bialik, was active in the Working Youth movement and trained as a metalworker.

He was drafted early into the IDF in 1963 and served in the Combat Engineering Corps. On March 16, 1965, he was sent to plow land with a tractor at Ramat Korazim, near the Syrian border, an area where Syrian forces had been firing at Israeli workers.

A recoilless gun shell fired from Syrian positions hit his tractor. He was pulled from the burning tractor badly wounded and later died of his wounds. A battle followed until evening, and 4 more IDF soldiers were wounded.

He was buried in the military cemetery in Haifa. Chief of Staff Yitzhak Rabin gave him a posthumous commendation, which was converted to the Medal of Courage in 1973. His name appears on several memorials, including the Combat Engineering Corps memorial near Hulda Junction.
