Shmuel Winograd was born in 1936 in Tel Aviv
Shmuel Winograd was born in Tel Aviv on January 4, 1936. He later lived and worked in the United States.
He studied electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in 1959. He completed his Ph.D. at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University in 1968, under the supervision of Jacob T. Schwartz.
He joined the IBM research staff in 1961. He directed its Mathematical Sciences Department from 1970 to 1974 and from 1980 to 1994. He was also a regular visiting professor at the Technion's faculty of computer science.
His work dealt with the computational side of arithmetic. He co-developed the Coppersmith-Winograd algorithm for matrix multiplication and created algorithms for the fast Fourier transform. He died on March 25, 2019.
