Uri Geller was born in Tel Aviv on 20 December 1946 to Itzhaak Geller, a soldier, and Margaret Freud. His parents divorced when he was 10, and he lived with a foster family on kibbutz Hatzerim. He then joined his mother in Nicosia, Cyprus, where he went to school and learned English.

Back in Israel, he worked in construction and then served in the Paratroopers Brigade. He was wounded in the Six-Day War in 1967. After his service he worked as a production manager at a textile factory and as a model.

In 1970 he began performing telepathy shows in Israel, first in small venues and later in large halls. Scientists and magicians said his feats were stage tricks. He moved to the United States in 1973, and in that year his appearance on The Tonight Show failed to show any powers.

From about 1985 he lived in the United Kingdom, where he appeared on many television shows. He married Hanna in 1979, and they have a son and a daughter. He later settled in Old Jaffa, where the Uri Geller Museum opened in 2021.
