Victor Zalgaller was born in 1920 in Parfino

Victor Zalgaller was born in Parfino, in Novgorod Governorate, on 25 December 1920. In 1936 he was among the winners of the Leningrad Mathematics Olympiads for high school students.

He began studying at Leningrad State University, but in 1941 the war interrupted his studies and he joined the Red Army. He fought in the defense of Leningrad and entered Germany in 1945.

He taught at Saint Petersburg Lyceum 239. His 1963 doctoral dissertation on polyhedra used computer programs written by his high school students. He worked early on under Aleksandr Aleksandrov and Leonid Kantorovich and wrote joint monographs with both.

With Yuri Burago he wrote the monograph Geometric Inequalities. He spent most of his life in Saint Petersburg, working at Leningrad State University and the Steklov Institute of Mathematics.

He immigrated to Israel in 1999. He died on 2 October 2020.
