Joram Lindenstrauss was born in 1936 in Tel Aviv

Joram Lindenstrauss was born in Tel Aviv in 1936. He was the only child of two lawyers who had immigrated from Berlin.

He began studying mathematics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1954 while serving in the army. He became a full-time student in 1956, earned a master's degree in 1959 and a Ph.D. in 1962, advised by Aryeh Dvoretzky and Branko Grünbaum.

After postdoctoral work at Yale University and the University of Washington, he joined the Hebrew University in 1965 and became a full professor in 1969. His research covered Banach space theory, convexity and geometric nonlinear functional analysis, and his results include the Johnson-Lindenstrauss lemma. He wrote more than 100 papers and several books, and edited journals including the Israel Journal of Mathematics.

He retired in 2005 and died in 2012. He was married to computer scientist Naomi Lindenstrauss, and their children Ayelet and Elon Lindenstrauss are also mathematicians.
