Ya'akov Uri was born in 1888 in Poltava Governorate
Ya'akov Uri was born Ya'akov Zaslavsky on 3 March 1888 in Prokhorovka, in the Poltava Governorate of the Russian Empire. His father Yehuda was a rabbi, and as a child he studied with his grandfather, the town's rabbi.
At 15 he moved to Kherson and studied at a yeshiva there. He also prepared for matriculation exams and gave private lessons, and one of his students was Moshe Shertok, later Prime Minister Moshe Sharett.
He moved to the Land of Israel in 1910 and joined Hapoel Hatzair. He worked in Be'er Tuvia, where he met his future wife Zehava, and changed his surname to the Hebrew name Uri after his great-uncle.
He was among the founders of Nahalal, the first moshav, and of the Moshavim Movement, and edited its monthly Talamim. A member of Mapai, he was a delegate to the Assembly of Representatives. He was elected to the Knesset in 1951 and lost his seat in the 1955 elections.
He died on 26 July 1970 and was buried in Nahalal Cemetery.
