Yigal Kipnis was born in 1949

Yigal Kipnis was born on October 28, 1949. He studied civil engineering at the Technion in Haifa and earned a BSc in 1977. He later completed an MA in 2003 and a PhD in 2006 in Land of Israel Studies at Haifa University.

Kipnis flew helicopters in the Israeli Air Force for 31 years, 26 of them in the reserves.

Since 1978 he has lived on Moshav Ma'ale Gamla in the Golan Heights, where he also works as a farmer. His research covers the political history and settlement geography of the Land of Israel in the modern era.

In 2013 he published a book on the political history and settlement of the Golan Heights since 1949, and a book on the road to the 1973 war. The second book presents records of secret channels involving Henry Kissinger, Golda Meir and Anwar Sadat, and argues that political choices played a central role in the outbreak of war. In 2025 he published a book on the 1982 Lebanon War, based on newly released documents about the coordination between Menachem Begin and Ariel Sharon.
