Youssef Atauna was born in 1966 in Israel

Atauna was born in 1966 to a Bedouin Muslim Arab family from Hura in the Negev. He went to primary school in Hura and finished high school in Tayibe. He lives with his family in Hura.

He trained at the Kaye teachers college in Beersheba and worked as a teacher for several years. He earned a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in public administration and policy at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

He led the youth section of the Shoket regional council and in 1996 became head of education at the Hura local council. He was active in the campaign for recognition of unrecognized villages in the Negev and helped found the Hagar association, which set up a bilingual school in Beersheba. In 2008 he was elected head of the council's workers' committee.

Placed 17th on the Joint List in 2015, he entered the Knesset in October 2017 after other members resigned. His entry was seen by many as a breach of a rotation deal with Balad and drew public protest, and he resigned in February 2018. He was elected again in 2022 on the Hadash and Ta'al list and resigned in June 2025 under a rotation deal with Ta'al's Samir Bin Said.
