The story of Zeev Pearl's life

Pearl belongs to the ninth generation of his family in Safed. The family came to the city at the end of the 18th century, among the disciples of the Baal Shem Tov. His great-grandfather Yoel Barshad was the first Jew to build a home outside the old Jewish quarter, and his father Shmuel Pearl commanded the Irgun in Safed.

He holds a master's degree in Land of Israel studies from Bar-Ilan University.

Pearl served in the IDF as an armored officer. In the Yom Kippur War his tank company was caught in an Egyptian ambush, and he was badly wounded. His tank driver, Benny Abramovich, saved him.

After his service he worked in government roles for 10 years before entering local politics. He was mayor of Safed from 1983 to 1993.

Today he is a tour guide who owns a touring company in the Galilee, and a historian and researcher of Safed. With his family he runs a guesthouse in the former family home. His son is the singer Itay Pearl.
