Zohar Zimro was born in Ethiopia in 1977. He immigrated to Israel at the age of 10. He joined a sports boarding school in northern Israel.

At 16 his high school sport teacher discovered his running. He competed in national events and later in international races. Until 2009 he mostly worked as a coach of running groups.

His marathon debut came in Berlin in 2009, in 2:23:48. In 2011 he ran the marathon in a personal record of 2:14:28 and qualified for the Olympics. He was named Athlete of the Year in 2011 by the Israel Athletics Association.

He won the Israeli marathon championship 4 times and ran the marathon at the 2012 London Olympics. In June 2012 he tested positive for a banned substance. It was ruled that he took it in good faith through another person's inhaler, and he was reprimanded and suspended for 28 days.

In 2008 he founded the nonprofit Running From The Heart with other runners, helping young people through sport. He also coaches young distance runners. He retired from competitive running after the 2015 Tiberias Marathon.
