מטרתו של חוק זה להסדיר עריכת בדיקות גנטיות ומתן ייעוץ גנטי ולהגן על זכות הנבדק לפרטיות לגבי המידע הגנטי המזוהה, והכל בלי לפגוע באיכות הטיפול הרפואי, במחקר הרפואי והגנטי, בקידום הרפואה ובהגנה על שלום הציבור.
