Marco Rubio in 2025

Marco Rubio, the United States Secretary of State, is considering leaving his post in the Trump administration to begin preparing a run for president in 2028, several Israeli outlets reported on Thursday. Israel Hayom, citing a report by the British newspaper The Independent, wrote that officials are bracing for a possible resignation as Rubio readies himself for the contest.

The Hebrew news site Ynet ran the story as a breaking alert, and its headline said Rubio is weighing resignation in order to start preparations for the 2028 race. A third outlet, News.co.il, reported that the White House rejects the claims and says there is no indication of a departure in the near term.

What the reports say about his plans

In the account published by Israel Hayom, people familiar with Rubio's thinking say he is preparing to compete for the Republican Party's presidential nomination. The same report names Vice President J. D. Vance as the figure expected to be his main rival for that nomination.

News.co.il added a different angle on his motives. It reported that people in Rubio's circle believe he wants to take a break following what the outlet described as the most recent political crisis. The report did not specify which crisis it meant, and none of the other reports referred to one.

None of the three outlets reported a decision. Each framed the story as Rubio weighing his options rather than having resigned, and Israel Hayom presented it as a question in its headline.

A White House denial

The reports do not fully agree on how likely a departure is. Israel Hayom's summary of The Independent describes officials preparing for a resignation. News.co.il, by contrast, reported that the White House is pushing back on the story and sees nothing to suggest Rubio is about to step down. Our account records both positions; the reports give no basis for deciding between them.

Why the secretary of state matters to Israel

The Secretary of State heads the US State Department and serves as America's senior diplomat, representing the administration in dealings with foreign governments. For Israel, which relies heavily on its relationship with Washington, the person in that role is one of the most closely watched officials in the American government, since the post shapes how US policy toward Israel and the wider Middle East is carried out in practice.

That is why a possible change at the top of the State Department drew immediate attention from Israeli media, with two outlets pushing it out as short alerts on the messaging app Telegram later the same day.

The race for the Republican nomination

Under the American system, each major party chooses its presidential candidate through a series of state contests before the general election. The reports describe a potential contest inside the Republican Party between two senior members of the current administration: Rubio as the country's top diplomat and Vance as vice president. If the reports are accurate, Rubio leaving his cabinet post would allow him to campaign without the constraints of serving in the administration.

The reports themselves offer no detail on Vance's own plans, and none of them quotes Vance or his staff responding to the suggestion that Rubio could challenge him.

What the reports do not say

None of the reports quotes Rubio himself or anyone speaking on the record for him, and the claims about his intentions rest on unnamed insiders and people around him. The reports do not say when a resignation might take place, who might replace him at the State Department, or what the political crisis mentioned by News.co.il refers to.
