An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 struck near Cyprus on the morning of 12 November 2025 and was felt across parts of Israel, according to the Israel Geological Survey. The survey timed the tremor at 11:31 a.m. No immediate damage and no injuries were reported.

Residents in northern and coastal areas of Israel noted mild shaking. Cyprus lies in the eastern Mediterranean, north-west of the Israeli coastline, and it sits on one of the two fault systems that between them govern how much the ground moves in Israel.

Why quakes near Cyprus register in Haifa

Cyprus sits on what geologists call the Cyprus arc, described by reference summaries of the tectonic literature as a curved plate boundary zone in the eastern Mediterranean that links the Hellenic arc to a triple junction where the Anatolian, African and Arabian plates meet. It is not a single clean fault. Deformation there is spread across a band roughly 50 kilometres wide, and the zone accommodates compression, extension and sideways strike-slip motion on different segments at the same time.

Israel's own seismic risk comes from a separate structure. The Dead Sea Transform is a series of faults running for about 1,000 kilometres and forming the boundary between the African and Arabian plates. It runs from south-eastern Turkey down to the Red Sea, threading through the Gulf of Aqaba, the Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee. Its Jordan Valley segment has not produced a major rupture since 1033, and geologists calculate that enough strain has accumulated there to drive an earthquake of around magnitude 7.4.

The event Israel has been warned about for a century

A magnitude 5.1 out at sea is a long way from that scenario. Reporting by the Times of Israel in April 2026, after a magnitude 4.7 quake off the Lebanese coast was felt from Haifa to Nahariya, set out the standing assessment: western Israel lies along the seismically active rift, experts put the interval between major regional earthquakes at roughly 80 to 100 years, and the last significant one struck in 1927, killing 500 people and injuring 700. The same report noted that officials told the Knesset in November that Israel remained badly unprepared for a major earthquake, despite more than two decades of warnings and repeated state audits.

How a tremor like this gets logged

Events in this part of the Mediterranean are catalogued in near real time by more than one agency. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, which describes itself as the European infrastructure for seismological products, publishes magnitude, depth and coordinates for each event and collects public felt-reports through its LastQuake system. That crowd-sourced layer is often what establishes how far inland a small offshore quake was actually noticed, as opposed to how far it could theoretically be detected by instruments.

What the report did not say

The Israel Geological Survey account gave a magnitude and a time but no depth, no precise epicentre beyond "near Cyprus", and no estimate of how many people felt the shaking. It did not name the Israeli towns where tremors were reported, beyond describing northern and coastal areas. Nor did it say whether the Home Front Command issued any public guidance, or whether any structures were inspected as a precaution.
