Iranian channels report explosions on Qeshm Island and claim US drones downed
Iranian outlets described blasts and air defence activity on Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz, alongside unverified claims of US drones brought down or seized.

Explosions were heard on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz and air defence systems there were switched on, Iranian media said in the evening, in accounts relayed by the Israeli news site Ynet. Shortly afterwards, Iranian channels described what they called an American strike on the island's air defence array, with News.co.il reporting accounts of five to six explosions in the area. The Israeli outlet stressed that neither the United States nor Iran had officially confirmed the incident and that the reports had not been verified.
Around the same time, Iranian sources made claims about American drones. Joe Truzman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) wrote that Telegram channels supportive of the Iranian government said two US MQM-170 reconnaissance drones had been downed south of Qeshm by electronic warfare systems belonging to the Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He noted that the channels offered no evidence. The Israeli television news outlet N12 gave a different figure, as set out below.
On the ground
🔴 BREAKING: Iranian state news agency IRNA reports explosions heard on Qeshm Island, with no official confirmation so far.
Where Qeshm Island is
Qeshm lies in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway linking the Persian Gulf to the open sea, and sits off Iran's southern coast. Ynet located the island in the Hormuz area, while News.co.il placed it in the Persian Gulf. The strait is one of the most closely watched shipping lanes in the world, and military activity there draws attention well beyond the region.
N12 correspondent Asaf Rosenzweig reported that Iranian outlets also described explosions heard in the port city of Bandar Abbas, which they linked to an American strike that hit an air defence system on Qeshm. Bandar Abbas is a major Iranian port on the mainland coast facing the island.
The competing drone claims
The accounts of what happened to the drones do not match, and readers should treat each as a claim rather than an established fact.

- Two drones, brought down: In Truzman's summary of pro-government Iranian Telegram channels, IRGC electronic warfare downed a pair of MQM-170 surveillance aircraft above the island's south.
- Two drones, taken over: News.co.il cited preliminary reports that the IRGC had seized control of two American drones in the skies over Qeshm using electronic means. It said there was no official US confirmation at that stage.
- Three drones, including an MQ-9: Rosenzweig reported on N12 that Iran had said earlier in the evening that it shot down three American drones, among them an MQ-9 unmanned aircraft. He presented the reported strike on Qeshm's air defences as coming after that Iranian announcement.
The sources therefore differ on the number of drones (two or three), the type (MQM-170 or a group that includes an MQ-9) and the method (shot down, downed by electronic warfare, or taken over electronically). None of the reports resolves these differences.
Who the IRGC is
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is a branch of Iran's armed forces that operates separately from the regular military and answers to the country's top leadership. Its Aerospace Force is the arm credited in the Iranian claims with the electronic warfare action against the drones. Electronic warfare here refers to jamming or interfering with the signals an unmanned aircraft relies on for navigation and control, which is why some reports speak of drones being brought down and others of drones being taken over.

How the reports reached the public
All of the information so far originates with Iranian channels and outlets, much of it on the messaging platform Telegram. The Israeli outlets reporting the event, Ynet, News.co.il and N12, framed their items as reports from Iran rather than independent findings. Truzman, an analyst at FDD, a research institute based in Washington, explicitly flagged the absence of supporting evidence. News.co.il repeatedly noted the lack of official confirmation.
One difference in framing is worth noting. News.co.il described the American strike as something Iranian channels were reporting. N12's items referred to the American strike on Qeshm's air defence system more directly, though still in the context of reports from Iran.
What the reports do not say
No statement from the US military or government has been reported, either confirming or denying a strike on Qeshm or the loss of any drones. No official Iranian statement has been cited; the claims come from channels and outlets rather than named officials. The reports give no information on casualties or damage from the explosions, and no evidence has been published for any of the drone claims.

How we checked this
Ynet, News.co.il, N12 and FDD analyst Joe Truzman all reported the event, but every account relays claims from Iranian channels; none independently verified the explosions, the strike or the drone losses. The three-drone figure and MQ-9 detail come only from N12.
