Israel Hands Its Air Force the First Combat-Ready Laser

Iron Beam was delivered to the IDF on 28 December, adding a laser layer beneath Iron Dome that shoots down rockets and drones for roughly the cost of electricity.

Israel’s Ministry of Defence announced that it had formally handed the first Iron Beam high-energy laser interception system to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), in a ceremony at the headquarters of Rafael Advanced Defense Systems in northern Israel. The ministry described the delivery as the point at which laser air defence stopped being an experiment and became an operational capability.

According to the announcement, the system was built over years of work led by the ministry’s research and development directorate with Elbit Systems and other Israeli defence firms including SCD and Shafir Systems. It is designed to intercept rockets, mortar bombs and unmanned aircraft at short range, and will be folded into the Israeli Air Force as an additional layer alongside Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Arrow. Defence officials said it had already intercepted several types of aerial threat in an extended series of trials under realistic conditions.

The arithmetic that makes a laser worth building

The ministry’s central claim is economic: that combining a powerful laser source with electro-optical tracking and adaptive optics allows precise engagements at negligible marginal cost: about the price of the electricity used, rather than thousands of dollars per launch. Published figures put numbers on that gap. Globes reported an Iron Dome interception at roughly $30,000 against something in the order of $5 to $10 for an Iron Beam shot, and described the delivered system as around 100 kilowatts with an effective range of up to about ten kilometres, against Iron Dome’s roughly forty. Globes also reported that the system carries the name Or Eitan, after Captain Eitan Oster, killed in fighting in Lebanon. Reference accounts of the programme describe an unusual technique behind that precision (hundreds of small beams fired at a target rather than one, converging on the first spot to connect) and date the concept's public unveiling to the Singapore Airshow in February 2014, with a demonstrator running by 2017 and trials at the White Sands Missile Range in the United States in April 2022.

That arithmetic matters because of the threat it is meant to answer. The economics of rocket and drone salvoes have run against the defender for two decades: a cheap projectile forces the launch of an expensive interceptor, and magazines run down. A laser does not deplete in the same way, so long as it has power.

What a laser cannot do

The limits are physical rather than engineering ones. A beam has to travel through the atmosphere to reach its target, and the Times of Israel noted that the system performs poorly in low visibility and heavy cloud, which is why the ministry is adding Iron Beam to the existing array rather than substituting it. The same report described Iron Beam as handling smaller projectiles while David’s Sling and Arrow continue to deal with larger and longer-range threats, and traced the development back more than a decade to the system’s first public unveiling in 2014.

Defence Minister Israel Katz called the handover a historic milestone, saying that for the first time anywhere a high-power laser system had reached full operational maturity, that Iron Beam fundamentally alters the threat calculus, and that any attempt to overwhelm Israel’s defences would come at a high cost. At the ceremony, according to the Times of Israel, the air force chief Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar called the moment “especially moving”, and Rafael’s chief executive Yoav Turgeman described the system as the most advanced laser interceptor in the world.

What is still unclear

The ministry did not say how many Iron Beam units have been delivered, where they will be stationed, or when the system will be declared fully operational within the air force. It gave no figures from the trials (no number of interceptions, no engagement ranges, no target types beyond the general categories) and no cost for the programme or for a single unit. It also did not address how quickly the system can recharge between shots or how many targets it can engage in sequence.
