Katz: anyone approaching Ali Taher Ridge in south Lebanon will be destroyed

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the military will act to keep Hezbollah or any other force from re-establishing itself on the Ali Taher Ridge in southern Lebanon, declaring that "anyone who approaches the ridge will be destroyed." The statement, carried by the Hebrew-language monitoring channel Abu Ali Express, described the ridge as part of what Katz called the yellow line and Israel's security zone in Lebanon, and said the Israel Defense Forces are operationally preparing to control it.

The remarks followed the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the hill itself. Ynet reported that the IDF has redeployed along the yellow line and pulled back from the underground complex that was destroyed in southern Lebanon, with forces taking up positions from which they can dominate the area by observation and by fire. According to the same report, Israeli forces are remaining inside the Beaufort compound.

What happened on the ridge

Times of Israel military correspondent Emanuel Fabian reported that Israeli troops left the hill in order to blow up a Hezbollah underground facility beneath it, and that the demolition took place on Thursday. In his account, the military said afterwards that it would reorganize its deployment in the area while retaining control of the ridge through surveillance and firepower. Fabian's report describes the destroyed site as Hezbollah tunnels beneath the hill; the Ynet report refers to an underground complex that was destroyed. Neither report gives dimensions, a length, or a figure for how much explosive material was used.

Who Israel Katz is

Israel Katz is Israel's defense minister, the civilian official at the head of the defense establishment and the minister to whom the IDF's chief of staff reports. Statements of this kind from the defense minister set declared policy rather than describe an operation already carried out, and the sources here present his words as a vow about future conduct on the ridge, not as an account of a strike.

The yellow line

The yellow line is the term used in Israeli reporting for the line along which Israeli forces are deployed inside southern Lebanon. Katz's statement places the Ali Taher Ridge on the Israeli side of that line and inside what he called Israel's security zone in Lebanon, which is the argument on which the declared rule about approaching the ridge rests. Ynet's report notes that Israel is waiting to see whether Hezbollah or Iran, Hezbollah's principal backer, responds to the demolition and the redeployment. The English-language and Hebrew-language versions of the quote match in substance; the wording differs only as translation would predict, with one rendering referring to the ridge and another to Ali Taher by name.

What the reports do not say

The material gives no casualty figures, on either side, from the demolition or from the withdrawal. It does not say how far the Israeli forces pulled back, what the new positions are, or how long the redeployment is expected to last.
