Sara Netanyahu's Channel 14 remarks on Yair Golan draw threatened lawsuit

Sara Netanyahu, the wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, used a television interview on Channel 14 to suggest that Yair Golan, chairman of the opposition Democrats party, had prior knowledge of the Hamas assault of October 7. Ynet reported that she asked on air how Golan came to be dressed and ready that morning while the prime minister did not yet know what was happening. The Jerusalem Post described the remarks as hinting at a conspiracy theory about Golan and the October 7 massacre, and the Times of Israel characterised them the same way.

The response from the opposition was immediate. The Democrats party issued a statement condemning what it called false and malicious remarks, saying that spreading conspiracy theories against Golan and blackening his conduct on October 7 crossed a red line. Hours later, N12 reported that Golan, speaking on the Israeli army radio station Galei Tzahal, said he would take legal action: "We will certainly file a suit against Sara Netanyahu."

Who Yair Golan is

Golan is a former major general in the Israel Defense Forces who rose to deputy chief of the general staff before entering politics. In remarks carried by N12, he called the accusation of treason a baseless conspiracy intended only to stoke hatred, and said Golan had shown responsibility and courage on the morning of October 7 and saved lives. A Ynet alert quoted a further line from Eisenkot aimed at the prime minister's wife: some people, he said, recount that they were not woken, while others got up and charged forward.

The Shin Bet comment

In the same interview, according to Ynet, Sara Netanyahu spoke about the Shin Bet, Israel's internal security agency, during the tenure of its former director Ronen Bar, saying the service protected the family and that despite incitement they were not murdered. Bar's departure from the agency followed a prolonged public dispute with the prime minister, and the Netanyahu family's relationship with the security establishment has been a recurring theme in Israeli political argument since the October 7 attack.
