Israeli security forces have detained six suspects and seized weapons, among them an M16 rifle, in an ongoing counterterrorism operation in Judea, the southern part of the West Bank, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The IDF spokesperson said the operation was launched after a shooting attack in Hebron on Friday, in which Staff Sergeant Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sergeant Yuval Shai Svilem were killed and other soldiers sustained light injuries.
The military said soldiers and members of Yamas, a Border Police counterterrorism unit, are carrying out the activity together. In a post on X, the IDF said those detained are suspected of involvement in terrorist activity, including the planning and facilitation of attacks, and that at least one of them is affiliated with Hamas.

What the military has said about the arrests
The IDF published its account in two places: its official Telegram channel and its account on X. Both versions describe the same core facts. Six people were taken into custody, the activity is continuing, and forces in the Hebron area confiscated weapons. The Telegram statement names the M16 rifle in its title. Both statements, as they appear in the material available to us, break off partway through the description of what was seized, so the full list of weapons is not available.
The army has not said where in the Hebron area the arrests took place, whether they happened in a single raid or over several days, or what specific role each suspect is alleged to have played.
A difference over Hamas affiliation
The reports do not agree on how many of those detained are linked to Hamas. A brief alert from Ynet, the news site of the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth, described all six as Hamas operatives. The IDF statement on X is narrower: it says the six suspects include one individual affiliated with Hamas, without attributing the others to any organisation. The Ynet item is a short headline alert pointing readers to a fuller story that is not part of the material here, so it is not clear what that wording was based on. We report both versions as they were published.

Where Judea and Hebron are
Judea is the name used by the Israeli government and military for the southern part of the West Bank, the territory Israel captured from Jordan in the Six Day War. Together with Samaria, the northern part, it forms the area the IDF refers to as Judea and Samaria, which is how the operation is labelled in the military's post on X. Much of the international community refers to the same territory as the West Bank.
Hebron is the largest Palestinian city in the West Bank and lies south of Jerusalem. It is also home to a small Israeli Jewish community living close to the Cave of the Patriarchs, a site revered in Judaism and Islam as the burial place of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Israeli soldiers are deployed in parts of the city, and it has long been a point of friction and a recurring location of attacks and military operations.
The units involved
The IDF is Israel's military, made up largely of conscripts alongside career personnel and reservists. Yamas is a specialised undercover unit of the Border Police, a branch of the Israel Police that operates in the West Bank alongside the army. Its members are trained for arrest raids against wanted suspects, which is why it is frequently paired with army units in operations of this kind.
Context: how these operations usually unfold
After a deadly attack, the Israeli military commonly launches arrest operations in the surrounding area, aimed at finding those responsible, people suspected of helping them, and anyone believed to be planning further attacks. The IDF describes such activity as counterterrorism. In the military's usage, soldiers who are killed are said to have "fallen", which is the term used in both IDF statements about Staff Sergeant Roytman and Sergeant Svilem.
Hamas, the Islamist movement that ruled the Gaza Strip, also maintains a presence in the West Bank, where the IDF regularly reports arrests of people it says are affiliated with the group.
What the reports do not say
The material leaves several questions unanswered. None of the reports states whether the six people detained are suspected of carrying out the Friday shooting itself, or whether the gunman or gunmen have been identified, caught or killed. The suspects are not named. The full list of seized weapons is missing because both IDF statements are cut off. The number of soldiers lightly injured in the Hebron attack is not given, nor are any details of how the attack happened. The reports also do not explain the discrepancy between Ynet's description of six Hamas operatives and the IDF's reference to a single individual affiliated with the group. The IDF says the operation is continuing, and it has not given an end date or a description of its scope.

How we checked this
The arrests and weapons seizure are reported by the IDF on Telegram and X and in a short Ynet alert; the details of the operation come from the military alone. The two organisations differ on how many suspects are linked to Hamas, and we have not independently verified either account.
