Adam Sandler first got on stage at 17, at his brother's urging

Adam Sandler was born in Brooklyn in 1966 and grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire, where his family moved when he was six. He first got on stage at 17, at his brother's urging, and graduated in acting from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988.

Comedian Dennis Miller saw his act and recommended him to Saturday Night Live, which hired him as a writer in 1990. A year later he was performing on the show, where he stood out with original comic songs such as The Chanukah Song. After SNL he starred in a run of hit comedies, from Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore to The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy.

Since 2015 most of his films have been made for Netflix, and he has won praise for dramatic roles in Punch-Drunk Love, Uncut Gems and Jay Kelly. He has released two Netflix stand-up specials, 100% Fresh in 2018 and Love You in 2024, received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2023, and went back on the road in 2025 with the You're My Best Friend Tour.
