Jerry Seinfeld started out at New York open-mic nights in 1976
Jerry Seinfeld was born in Brooklyn in 1954 and grew up in Massapequa, on Long Island. At 16 he volunteered on Kibbutz Sa'ar in Israel, and in 1976, after graduating from Queens College, he started trying out at open-mic nights in New York.
A spot on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1981 led to regular late-night appearances. In 1989 he and Larry David launched Seinfeld on NBC, a sitcom in which he played a version of himself. It ran for nine seasons and became one of the most watched comedies on American television.
When the show ended in 1998 he went back to the stage. In all he has released four stand-up specials, hosted Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee from 2012 to 2019, and in 2024 directed and starred in the Netflix film Unfrosted.
