Avraham Fried was a boy soloist before a producer heard him at a summer camp
Avraham Fried was born in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, in 1959, and recorded solos with a children's choir as a boy. The producer Sheya Mendlowitz heard him sing at a summer camp, and in 1981 he released his first album, No Jew Will Be Left Behind, whose title song was composed by Yossi Green.
With Mendlowitz and Green he made eight albums, and Green wrote some of his biggest hits, among them Aderaba and Tanya. His music mixes pop, rock and jazz, he sings in Hebrew, Yiddish and English, and he has played Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Wembley in London and Heichal HaTarbut in Tel Aviv.
Since the early 2000s he has also worked with Israeli artists: in 2009 his recording of Shehashemesh Taavor Alai led to a run of joint concerts with its composer, Hanan Yovel, and his 2017 album Kama Tov Shenifgashnu was written with Rami Kleinstein, Ishay Ribo and others. Abba (2019) was covered in Russian, Ukrainian and French, and in 2020 he released Batzoret, a duet with Aviv Geffen.
