Shlomo Artzi won his first song festival while still in Navy uniform

Shlomo Artzi was born in 1949 on Moshav Alonei Abba in the Jezreel Valley and grew up in Tel Aviv. He became the lead singer of the Navy band, and in 1970, still in uniform, he won the Israel Song Festival with Pitom Achshav, Pitom HaYom.

In 1975 he sang for Israel at Eurovision. A few weak years followed, until Gever Holekh Le'ibud and Drachim brought him back, and Tirkod in 1984 moved him from small halls to big parks. Yareah, Shnayim and Ahavtihem, in 1992, 1996 and 2000, each sold more than 100,000 copies.

He writes and composes most of his own songs, and has written dozens for other singers. From 1980 to 2012 he hosted Od Lo Shabbat on Army Radio. In 2018 he lit a torch at Israel's 70th Independence Day ceremony, and in June 2026 he released Shlomo VeHaAndalusim, nine of his songs recorded with the Israeli Andalusian Orchestra.

After a slump in the late 1970s he came back to become one of Israel's most successful singers
