Trifonas taught himself the bouzouki in Nicosia and came to Tel Aviv in 1966 to sing Greek music
Trifonas Nikolaidis was born in 1944 in the village of Agios Theodoros in Cyprus. As a teenager he moved to Nicosia and worked in a carpentry shop, singing after hours and teaching himself the bouzouki, and from 1963 he sang regularly at a nightclub, built his own band and became a star in Cyprus.
In 1966 he was invited to sing at Cafe Athena in Tel Aviv, and a few months later moved to the Ariana club in Jaffa, where he played for five years. His breakthrough in Israel came in 1970 with his debut single, Dir-La-Da, a Greek folk song from Kalymnos; its B side, Agonia, was a hit too. He sang Dir-La-Da in George Ovadia's film Ariana and played himself in Salomonico (1972).
In 1980 he moved to the United States, where he led the Alpha Music Orchestra, and in 1985 he toured Israel with Alon Olearchik and Zuzu Musa's orchestra, with the duet Kulam Kulam. Back in Israel he sang Pitzrika with Eyal Golan, played himself again in Hummus Full Trailer (2022), and in August 2023 he marked 60 years on stage with a show at Heichal HaTarbut in Jerusalem.
