Yehuda Poliker went from leading Benzene to a solo career that brought Greek songs into Israeli music

Yehuda Poliker was born in 1950 in Kiryat Haim, Haifa. He played in several bands as a teenager, and at the end of the 1970s joined Zvika Pick's tour as a guitarist. In 1981 his band signed with CBS Israel, took the name Benzene and released two hit albums, 24 Sha'ot and Mishmeret Layla; Poliker led the band, composed almost all its songs and sang most of them, and Yom Shishi was the song of the year in 1982.

After Benzene broke up in 1985 he went solo with Einayim Sheli, Greek songs translated into Hebrew, which sold more than 70,000 copies and helped bring Greek music to a wide Israeli audience. Efer VeAvak (1988), about the children of Holocaust survivors, also sold more than 70,000 copies, and in 2005 ynet ranked it the best Israeli album ever. Pachot Aval Koev (1990) sold more than 140,000, his most successful album.

He has also composed for others, among them most of Gidi Gov's Derech Eretz, including Shalal Sharav. The title song of Eich Korim LaAhava Sheli (2001) won ACUM's song of the year, Kol Davar Mazkir Li (2011) and Muzeon HaHalomot (2014) both went gold within two weeks, and in 2012 he received ACUM's lifetime achievement award. He lit a torch at the 2019 Independence Day ceremony, and in November 2025 played his first concert in Thessaloniki, 40 years after Einayim Sheli.
