A Georgian restaurant and bar on the Arches beach in Ashdod, open from breakfast until one in the morning, with pastries from a stone oven and a terrace facing the sea

Petra is a Georgian restaurant and bar on the first line of the sea at the Arches beach (Hof HaKshatot) in Ashdod. Its owner, the restaurateur Simo Ben Hovel, told Walla in November 2024 that he had taken it over 18 years earlier, when it was a tiny pub facing the sea, and set out to focus on Georgian cooking to set it apart; a Calcalist piece of 2021, reposted on its website, says he had worked there in his youth, when it was a bar and hookah place on two levels. On its website he tells how his love of cooking began at 15, washing dishes in a small restaurant, went on through his army service as a cook, and won out over a well-paid job at the Israel Electric Corporation. The doughs are made on the premises and baked in a stone oven, and Ben Hovel told Walla that Georgian "mamas" make the khachapuri, the doughs and the fillings from scratch, beside a grill station and two cooks who lead the Italian side. The menu runs to more than a hundred dishes: khachapuri adjaruli, imeruli, lobiani, khinkali, chanakhi and kharcho soup, borscht, pelmeni and beef stroganoff, seafood and whole fish, entrecôte of Golan Heights beef, burgers, pasta and pizza, with breakfast from 09:00. A renovation begun before the Swords of Iron war doubled the restaurant and its kitchens and added a kitchen open to the room; it now seats about 350, with an indoor hall for events of up to 50 guests and a covered terrace facing the sea for up to 140. It opens every day until 01:00, Friday and Saturday included, and it is not kosher. Its website names Bel Miller as head chef and culinary adviser, and in June 2026 Buzzy Gordon of ynetnews reported that Channel 13's chef Charlie Fadida had become its executive chef, that its cooking is now called contemporary Georgian and international, and that it is invariably packed at weekends; in February 2025 he had written that everything about Petra is huge, from the premises to the portions. mako listed it among Ashdod's best restaurants in 2023 and again in April 2025, when it wrote that Petra and Trio, at the other end of the Arches beach, are veteran Georgian restaurants working since the early 2000s with almost the same menu; Trio's own website says it was founded by Avi Papismedov and his family.
