39 Ben Gurion Avenue, Haifa

Arab home cooking beside pasta, taboon pizza and seafood, in a Templer house with a garden yard on the German Colony's main avenue

Shtroudl is a restaurant in a Templer building about 150 years old, by its own account, on Ben Gurion Avenue in the German Colony, at the foot of the Baha'i Gardens. It belongs to the brothers Alaa and Issa Asaad, who were born in Haifa. By the brothers' account it began in 2007 as a small café in the lower city, and its name comes from their mother's apple cake; its logo still reads "Since 2007". Its kitchen joins traditional Arab cooking with modern techniques, in its own words, and many of the dishes are the recipes of their mother, Itaf: the brothers told Walla in 2022 that no dish was served until she had tasted and approved it. The menu runs from shanklish, vine leaves from Fureidis and kibbeh to shishbarak, sheikh al-mahshi and musakhan, beside pastas, pizzas from the taboon, seafood and steaks, with Arab breakfasts every morning; the house strudel is among its desserts. The restaurant is divided into areas: a front yard of olive and fruit trees and fountains that faces the avenue and the gardens above it, and indoor rooms furnished with pieces the brothers collected in Europe, among them a VIP room for private and business events. Alaa Asaad told mako in 2020 that the yard seats a hundred. Every December it is decorated for Christmas, when the German Colony holds its Holiday of Holidays. Its Ontopo page says it works mainly by booking but also takes guests without one, with waits of up to 20 minutes at the busiest times. ynet listed it among Haifa's recommended restaurants in 2024, and Rest's magazine among the city's ten best in 2025.

Sources disagree on these hours

Its website gives no hours. Its booking page on Ontopo, which the website links, has it open from 09:00 to 22:30 every day but Friday, when it closes at 23:00, and takes the last bookings for 21:30; its breakfast menu there says breakfast is served from 08:30 to 12:30. Its entry on the city's tourism site, which carries the website's own text and was added in January 2026, gives the same closing times and opens at 08:30 from Sunday to Friday. Its Google listing, as Restaurant Guru and Wanderlog copy it, gives 09:00 to 23:30 every day. Rest, updated in July 2026, has it open from 10:00 to 22:00 from Sunday to Thursday and from 09:00 to 22:00 on Friday and Saturday. Wolt takes orders from it from 10:00 to 23:00 every day; those are delivery hours. No source gives a break between lunch and dinner. The listing on d.co.il still gives café hours of 07:30 to 19:30.
