Goldsmiths' Market (Souq al-Khawajat), at the corner of David Street, Old City, Jerusalem
A small hummus place with no sign where David Street meets the Old City's Goldsmiths' Market, with warm hummus from the morning and a pot of maqluba at noon
Arafat Hummus, also called Hummus Nazmi, is a small hummus place with no sign in the Old City market, in the Muslim Quarter. Walking down David Street from Jaffa Gate, at its foot you turn left into the Goldsmiths' Market instead of right towards the Cardo and the Western Wall, and it is a few metres along. The hummus is ground in small batches, as Kol Ha'ir described it, and served warm in deep bowls with ful or whole chickpeas and olive oil, with fresh, thick pitas, pickles, onion and hot peppers; the press describes it as very sour, with a lot of lemon, in the East Jerusalem style. At midday there are home-cooked dishes: a pot of maqluba, yellow rice with lamb and fried cauliflower, turned out onto a tray around 12:30, beef meatballs in tomato sauce with potatoes, and, ynet added in 2025, falafel. It takes up a few small rooms on both sides of the alley, with the kitchen across from the main eating room. Space is short, so diners eat and make room for the next, and 50 Best Discovery says workmen and market traders keep coming back. It opens early in the morning and closes when the food runs out. Yehonatan Cohen opened ynet's 2025 list of the best hummus places in Israel with it, calling it the finest ambassador of East Jerusalem hummus and a fine stop before or after a morning visit to the Western Wall, and it is listed in 50 Best Discovery, the restaurant guide of The World's 50 Best.
What happens here
- Lunchtime, around 12:30
- The maqluba is turned over
The day's pot of maqluba, yellow rice with lamb and fried cauliflower, is turned out onto a large tray at lunchtime, and the locals crowd in for it, the city's tourism site says. Kol Ha'ir saw it turned at 12:30 sharp in 2017 and again in 2019, and a waiter told it in 2017 that the owners had done so every day for 65 years.
- From early morning
- Hummus while it lasts
It opens early in the morning and serves until the hummus runs out, ynet wrote in 2020. 50 Best Discovery gives it for breakfast and lunch and advises coming before noon, and ynet called it a fine stop before or after a morning visit to the Western Wall.

No kashrut certificate was found. It is not on the Jerusalem religious council's list of kosher businesses, read on 1 October 2026, under either of its names or in the Goldsmiths' Market. It has no pages of its own showing a certificate, it is open on Saturday, and the city's tourism site calls it not kosher. We found no published accessibility statement, so call ahead if step-free access matters to you.
The name does not appear in the Companies Registrar, which points to a sole proprietorship or partnership rather than a company. Jerusalem does not publish its business licence register online, so the licence could not be checked.
