5 Mendele Mocher Sforim Street (Mendeli Street Hotel), Tel Aviv-Yafo

A chef restaurant on the ground floor of the Mendeli Street Hotel near the Tel Aviv beach, open since 2015, named for the spice mace and cooked today by chef Bar Tzanger

Mashya is a chef restaurant on the ground floor of the Mendeli Street Hotel, a design hotel of 66 rooms on Mendele Mocher Sforim Street in central Tel Aviv, which its website places moments from the beach. It is named for mace, the lacy covering of the nutmeg that gives Moroccan cooking an aromatic spark, and by its own account the team behind Kitchen Market and Onza planned it for twelve months as its homage to Tel Aviv: local, rooted and intimate, but modern. mako has written of it as the restaurant of the restaurateurs Assaf Liss and Omri Amar and of their Baraka House group. Chef Yossi Shitrit opened it in August 2015 with his take on refined Moroccan cooking, as Haaretz reported, and its press page lists Time Out's food awards of 2016, which named it the best restaurant in Tel Aviv. After a fire, Shitrit's departure and the pandemic, it reopened in the summer of 2021 under Guy Arish, who had done two internships at Noma (Walla, Time Out), and in January 2025 Gil Dahan, who had cooked at Weiss and Chena, became its third chef; Walla's critic Avi Efrati wrote in September 2025 that under Arish it had been one of the better chef restaurants here. Its kitchen is now led by Bar Tzanger, who grew up in Kfar Saba and has lived in Jaffa for years, studied at Alain Ducasse's school, did a stage at L'Arpège under Alain Passard, led the kitchen of Giardino in Jaffa and, by the restaurant's account, won the eighth season of Game of Chefs in 2026; mako wrote in July 2026 that he is changing the restaurant. By its own description the room is bright and clean, with wood, clay and metal, green climbing plants, soft light and porcelain and basalt tableware made for it by Adi Nissani's studio on the edge of the Jaffa flea market, and its booking page seats guests inside, at the bar or outside. The evening menu of September 2026 runs from Scottish bread with chili and za'atar butter and oysters to sashimi with grapes and yuzu, beef kubaniya, crab shishbarak with labneh, grouper hamusta, a whole fish from the taboon sold by weight, sirloin and beef fillet. On weekday mornings it serves breakfast with a buffet, from Monday to Thursday a business lunch, and on Friday and Saturday a brunch with a buffet, which had come back by June 2026, Time Out reported. La Liste gave it 83 points in its 2026 ranking of the world's 1,000 best restaurants, second among the eight from Israel, as ynet reported in November 2025, and Time Out included it in its September 2025 list of the restaurants it recommends in central Tel Aviv and in its June 2026 list of the city's 26 recommended fine-dining restaurants.

Sources disagree on these hours

The times are those its website gives: breakfast from Sunday to Thursday, 08:00 to 11:30; the business lunch from Monday to Thursday, 12:00 to 15:30, so from Monday to Thursday there is half an hour between the two; dinner from Monday to Friday, 18:30 to 23:00; and the brunch on Friday and Saturday, 08:00 to 14:00. Its phone desk for bookings opens at 08:00 from Monday to Saturday. Its Google listing, as the copy in its Tabit record of 7 September 2026 and Wanderlog show it, also has dinner on Saturday from 18:30 to 22:00 and ends breakfast at 11:00, lunch at 15:00 and dinner at 22:00, and its booking settings on Tabit open Saturday-evening tables too. Its weekday breakfast menu of August 2026 says it is served Monday to Thursday, while its website and its booking page include Sunday. An older contact page on its website still gives dinner from Tuesday to Saturday, 18:00 to 23:30, and the brunch until 13:00.
