A Mediterranean restaurant in Levinsky Market, open since 2012, with small plates to go with the ouzo, a 12-seat bar and a long list of ouzo and arak

Ouzeria is a Mediterranean restaurant and bar on Matalon Street, in Levinsky Market in the south of Tel Aviv. Chef Avivit Priel-Avichai, who had been the chef of Tapeo from 2002 to 2012, opened it in 2012 with her partner Ofir Lami, inspired, its website says, by Spanish tapas bars and by the ouzerias they visited in Athens, to serve original, joyful food from all the kitchens of the Mediterranean. A few tables stand by large windows that look onto the market, and a wide bar seats 12, with a drinks list that leans on anise: ouzo from Greece, arak from Israel, Bethlehem, Jordan and Lebanon, and French pastis. Priel-Avichai led it for 14 years and left in the summer of 2026; the kitchen is now run by Erez Omid, who Time Out says had worked there for a decade as its operations chef and who, Haaretz writes, was her right hand. Reviewing it in Haaretz on 16 July 2026, Sagi Cohen found that the Greek music of her years, played under a portrait of Vasilis Tsitsanis printed in the room, had given way to Israeli Mediterranean songs, and wrote that Omid's new menu is full of good dishes; his headline says the food stayed great. The menu moves from small plates to go with the ouzo, such as vine-leaf dip, tzatziki, ajo blanco and bruschettas at 28 to 32 shekels, through house classics like fried anchovies, calamari, shrimps with tomatoes dried in-house, chicken souvlaki, moussaka and the fried cauliflower still named after Avivit, to a seasonal list that on 1 October 2026 opened with a Rosh Hashanah ceviche. Time Out has described it as just the market restaurant one imagines, with excellent Mediterranean food, a loose and loud atmosphere and a clever use of Balkan food traditions, a phenomenon of its own for more than a decade. At lunch tables go to whoever comes, and bookings are taken for the evening from 18:00. Next to it, at 25 Zevulun Street, its Next Door space holds private events of up to 40 guests; in 2025 Time Out reported that Priel-Avichai was hosting chefs there who had lost their kitchens, among them colleagues from the north.
