56 HaMeyasdim Street, Wilder courtyard, Zichron Yaakov

A wine bar in an old stone cellar in a courtyard on Zichron Yaakov's pedestrian street, serving cheese and smoked-meat meals with Israeli and imported wines

Amos Maroz, a theatre producer who left Tel Aviv for Zichron Yaakov with his wife (and, as its site notes, the father of Guy Maroz), turned an old stone cellar in the Wilder courtyard on HaMeyasdim Street, the town's pedestrian street, into a wine bar. Its site says it has been open for 33 years, and when Rest's magazine interviewed him in 2019 it called him the owner for the past 28. By its own account the building served as a jail under Ottoman rule; Maroz told Rest it was built in the Turkish manner, with arches and stone, and that he renovated it keeping the old style. Steps lead down into a room of stone walls under a bell-shaped ceiling, with tables in the entrance and in an inner room among shelves of old bottles, and French and Italian music of the 1950s to the 1970s playing. The menu is short: meals of cheese, of smoked beef and goose in the cellar's own sauce, or of both, for two or for four, plus a salad and one dessert, beside a list of more than 80 wines, from a house blend made for the cellar to old Bordeaux ordered ahead. Its site describes Maroz as a friend and admirer of the late Rafi Nelson, whom it calls a wine legend and whose path it says he continues, and Rest has listed it among places for a marriage proposal.
