Alex Goldfarb was born in 1947 in Seini, Romania. He moved to Israel with his parents in 1963.

He joined the IDF in May 1965 and served as a combat soldier in the Paratroopers. After his release he set up a company for electrical and building work and joined the leadership of the Israeli electricians' union. He studied business management at the College of Management and later earned a BA in political science and human resources management from Bar-Ilan University.

He was elected to the Knesset in 1992 on the Tzomet list. In February 1994 he left Tzomet with Gonen Segev and Esther Salmovitz to form Yiud, which joined Yitzhak Rabin's government, and he became Deputy Minister of Housing and Construction. Opponents of the Oslo II agreement claimed his support was linked to a Mitsubishi car, while he said he voted on the merits, and the agreement passed 61 to 59.

In November 1995 he and Salmovitz left Yiud to form Atid, which did not run in 1996, and he lost his seat. He joined the Labor Party and served until 2003 as the official in charge of defense industries at the Ministry of Defense. In 2004 he founded a consulting company, and in 2009 he ran for mayor of Beer Tuvia and lost.
