Esther Salmovitz

Esther Salmovitz was born in 1948 in Carei

Salmovitz was born Esther Farkash in Carei, Romania, in 1948, to a family of Holocaust survivors. Her mother survived Auschwitz and was freed from Bergen-Belsen. The family immigrated to Israel in 1950 and lived in the Kfar Ata transit camp, then Acre, and finally Moshav Ben Ami, where they farmed.

She worked as a real estate assistant at a law office and became active in local public life in Nahariya. She chaired the Tzomet branch in the city and headed the party on the city council. Shortly before the 1992 elections she served as the party's secretary general.

Rafael Eitan placed her seventh on the Tzomet list, and she was elected to the 13th Knesset in 1992. She sat on the Education and Culture Committee and the State Control Committee, helped found the committee on the status of women, and served as a deputy speaker. In 1994 she left Tzomet with Alex Goldfarb and Gonen Segev to form Yiud, and in November 1995 she and Goldfarb formed Atid.

Before the 1996 elections she joined Likud but failed in its primaries and lost her seat. She then completed degrees in business administration and law, and in 2007 she was licensed as a lawyer and mediator. She lives in Kfar Vradim, is married to Giora Salmovitz, and has 2 children and 5 grandchildren.
