Boris Tsirelson was born in 1950 in Saint Petersburg
Boris Tsirelson was born in Leningrad in 1950 to a Russian Jewish family. On his father Simeon's side, he was the great-nephew of Rabbi Yehuda Leib Tsirelson, chief rabbi of Bessarabia from 1918 to 1941.
He earned a master's degree at the University of Leningrad and stayed there for graduate studies. He received his Ph.D. in 1975 with a thesis on bounded Gaussian processes, supervised by Ildar Ibragimov.
He took part in the refusenik movement and was allowed to immigrate to Israel only in 1991. From then until 2017 he was a professor at Tel Aviv University.
His work includes Tsirelson's bound in quantum mechanics, Tsirelson space in the theory of Banach spaces, and Tsirelson's drift in stochastic differential equations. With Vladimir Sudakov he proved the Gaussian isoperimetric inequality, and he also worked on fault-tolerant cellular automata. In 1998 he was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin.
Tsirelson died on January 21, 2020.
