Drori was born Hasya Kupfermintz in 1899 in Gomel, then in the Russian Empire. She grew up in a traditional family, the youngest child of a timber merchant. She belonged to the Youth of Zion and HeHalutz youth groups.

She studied at a Jewish girls' school in Gomel and then at a Russian gymnasium. She began medical studies but left after three semesters. In 1918 she studied at a Hebrew kindergarten teachers' seminary in Odessa, and in 1920 she married Aviezer Kupfermintz.

She arrived in Mandatory Palestine in 1922 and joined Gdud HaAvoda and the women workers' movement. In 1924 she was among the founders of moshav Kfar Yehezkel. She was active in the Working Mothers Organization and Mapai, and in 1937 went to the United States as an emissary of Mapai and the Histadrut.
