Nir Poraz was born in 1971 in Ramat HaSharon
Nir Poraz was born on May 14, 1971, to Matia and Maoz Poraz. His father, an Air Force pilot, was killed in the Yom Kippur War. He grew up in Ramat HaSharon and attended the Golan elementary school and Rothberg High School there.
Under IDF rules he was not meant to serve in a combat unit, but he chose a combat path and volunteered for Sayeret Matkal. After paratrooper basic training and full training as a fighter, he went to officers' course and returned to the unit as a team commander. In May 1994 he took part in the operation in which Mustafa Dirani was seized from his home in Lebanon.
In October 1994 he was on leave before his discharge and was called back to command the force that was to break into a house in Bir Nabala, where Nachshon Wachsman was held. The blast failed to open the iron doors, the captors shot Wachsman, and Poraz was shot and killed at the head of his soldiers on October 14, 1994. He was buried at Kiryat Shaul military cemetery in the section where his father is buried.
He received the Chief of Staff citation after his death. A duathlon in Ramat HaSharon, a bird migration research center at Latrun and the Medinol Nir stents are named after him. In 2011 a Torah scroll was dedicated in his memory and his father's.
