Chaim-Yosef (Sefi) Shauman was born in Tel Aviv to Adina and Israel, Holocaust survivors who reached Jaffa in 1949. He and his sister Rivka were named after their paternal grandparents, who died in the Holocaust. He grew up in the Bnei Akiva youth movement and liked sports.

He studied at the Etzion religious school in Tel Aviv and at the Nehalim yeshiva. Later he earned a bachelor's degree in economics and business administration at Bar-Ilan University.

He joined the Armored Corps in 1971 and became an officer. In the Yom Kippur War he led a platoon in Battalion 195 of Brigade 401, was wounded and returned to his unit. He later commanded a company, Battalion 433 and then Battalion 196, the armored officers' course.

In the 1982 Lebanon War his battalion took the town of Jezzine on 8 June. The next day, during the capture of Ein a-Tineh, he was killed by fire from Israeli forces after a coordination failure in the dark. He left a wife, Hana, a son and a daughter.

A training center of Brigade 460 and a center at the Nehalim yeshiva bear his name. Composer Oded Zehavi dedicated a choral work to him.
