במהלך שנת כהונתו הראשונה יבקר שופט בבית סוהר או במקום מעצר שבאחריות שירות בתי הסוהר, ושופט הדן בהליכים פליליים – גם אחת לארבע שנים; בתום הביקור ימסור השופט הודעה על כך לנשיא בית המשפט שבו הוא מכהן.
