רב ראשי לישראל וחבר מועצה נבחר רשאי להתפטר על ידי הגשת כתב התפטרות לשר; כהונתם נפסקת כעבור 48 שעות לאחר שכתב ההתפטרות הגיע לידי השר, זולת אם חזרו בהם מהתפטרותם לפני כן.
