Klara Schneiderova, a Czech diplomat who headed the Jerusalem branch of the Czech Republic's embassy in Israel, was killed after being struck by a minibus on Agrippas Street in central Jerusalem, according to an announcement from the Czech embassy in Israel. N12 reported the embassy's statement, which said she died in a road accident the previous day after the vehicle ran her over in the city centre.

Ynet reported that Schneiderova was 30 years old and that the crash happened by the Mahane Yehuda market. The outlet said video of the incident shows the driver of the minibus losing control of the vehicle before it struck and killed her. News.co.il, also citing the embassy, described her as a senior Czech diplomat and placed the collision on Agrippas Street.

A family link to Israel

Ynet reported that Schneiderova had a personal history with the country that predated her posting. Her father served as the Czech ambassador to Israel when she was a child, according to the outlet, and she developed an attachment to the country during those years. Ynet said that one day before her death she had spoken about returning to Israel as a diplomat herself, describing it as a circle coming to a close. The report did not say where or to whom she made those remarks.

What the Jerusalem branch is

The Czech Republic's main embassy in Israel operates from Tel Aviv, as most foreign embassies do. The Jerusalem branch is an office of that embassy located in the city, and Schneiderova was its head, according to the embassy's announcement as reported by N12. The reports do not describe her specific duties or how long she had held the role.

Prague has generally been regarded as one of the European governments most closely aligned with Israel, and its presence in Jerusalem has been part of that relationship. None of the reports on Schneiderova's death discuss the diplomatic dimension, and they treat the event as a road accident.

Where it happened

Mahane Yehuda is Jerusalem's best known open air market, a dense grid of produce stalls, bakeries, restaurants and bars in the west of the city centre. It is busy with shoppers by day and with diners and drinkers at night. Agrippas Street runs along one side of the market and is a working city street lined with shops and eateries, carrying buses, delivery vehicles and taxis as well as heavy foot traffic. Pedestrians frequently cross between the market's alleys and the street.

The reports differ slightly in how they place the crash. Ynet locates it near or at the Mahane Yehuda market, while N12 and News.co.il, relaying the embassy, name Agrippas Street in the city centre. Given that the street borders the market, these accounts are compatible, but none of the reports gives a precise address or intersection.

How the news emerged

The death became public through a statement from the Czech embassy in Israel, which Israeli outlets carried. Ynet's alert service flagged the head of the embassy's branch as having been killed in a road accident close to the market, and N12 and News.co.il both attributed the details of the collision to the embassy. Ynet's fuller report added her age, her family background and its description of the video footage.

What the reports do not say

Several basic points are absent from all of the coverage:

  • None of the reports identifies the minibus driver, says whether the driver was hurt, or states whether the driver was detained or questioned.
  • No cause is given for the loss of control described by Ynet. The reports do not mention vehicle faults, speed, road conditions or any medical issue.
  • There is no statement attributed to Israel Police or to emergency medical services, and no account of whether anyone else was injured.
  • The time of day is not given. The reports say only that the death occurred the day before the embassy's announcement was published.
  • There is no word on funeral arrangements, repatriation, or any response from the Czech foreign ministry in Prague or from Israeli officials beyond the embassy statement.

The video Ynet describes has been characterised only by that outlet, and its account of what the footage shows has not been echoed in the other reports.

How we checked this

The death and the minibus collision on Agrippas Street were reported by N12 and News.co.il citing the Czech embassy, and by Ynet. Her age, her father's posting and the description of video footage come from Ynet alone; we have not seen the footage.
