IDF says Gaza City strikes killed Hamas commander who held 4 hostages

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that strikes in the Gaza Strip earlier this week killed two members of Hamas' military wing, one of whom it said had taken part in the October 7 attack on Israel and later helped hold four Israeli hostages. In a statement posted on X, the military identified them as Hassan Mahmoud Siam, whom it described as a commander, and Adham Sabhi Salim Ziara, described as another operative.

According to the IDF, Siam crossed into Israel during the October 7 massacre and was involved in keeping Amit Soussana, Keith and Aviva Siegel, and Dafna Elyakim captive in Gaza. Emanuel Fabian, military correspondent for The Times of Israel, reported that the strike that killed Siam was carried out on Wednesday in Gaza City. Ynet reported that Ziara was also killed in Gaza City, and The Jerusalem Post, publishing images credited to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit, likewise placed both strikes in Gaza City this week.

What the military accuses the two men of

The IDF said that in recent days the two had been advancing attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers and working to rebuild Hamas' capabilities, which it called a systematic violation of the ceasefire. Ynet's account was more specific, saying the pair had been involved in shooting at Israeli troops and planting explosive devices along the Yellow Line.

These accusations come from the Israeli military. None of the reports cites a statement from Hamas or any other party responding to them.

The Yellow Line and the ceasefire

The Yellow Line is the term used in Israel for the boundary inside Gaza that marks where Israeli forces are positioned under the current ceasefire arrangements. Differing accounts of the timing

The reports do not fully agree on when and how Siam was killed. Fabian, relaying the military's announcement, said the fatal strike took place on Wednesday. The Telegram channel Abu Ali Express, which monitors Arab media, reported that a man it named as Hassan Siam, known by the nickname "Khabab", was killed in a strike in Gaza City's Rimal neighbourhood. Citing Gazan sources, the channel said he had been wounded in a separate attempt on his life roughly a week earlier, and it described him as having been killed "today" in a post published on the same day as the IDF announcement. Israel.com has not been able to reconcile these accounts, and the IDF statement does not mention an earlier attempt.

The spelling of his surname also differs between sources: the IDF and English-language outlets write Siam, while Abu Ali Express rendered it with a different Hebrew spelling. Given the shared first name, the Gaza City location and the timing, the reports appear to refer to the same person, but the channel did not explicitly connect its report to the IDF's hostage allegations.

What the reports do not say

None of the reports states the exact date of the strike that killed Ziara, or whether the two men were killed in the same strike or in separate ones. The IDF did not say what weapons were used, and no report mentions whether anyone else was killed or injured in either strike. The reports give no detail on Ziara's role beyond calling him an operative, and do not say whether he was also linked to October 7 or to the holding of hostages; The Jerusalem Post's headline refers to two men who took part in the massacre, while the IDF statement attributes that role only to Siam. The claim that Siam survived an earlier attempt rests on a single channel citing unnamed Gazan sources. The reports do not say whether the four hostages were informed, and none includes a response from Hamas.
